This month some new psoriasis skincare products have joined our range. Since psoriasis requires special skincare, it is extremely important to us to ensure that our products are well tolerated and do not cause skin irritation.
That's why we had our new products tested for skin compatibility by Dermatest. All of our new products have received the original Dermatest seal.
Today we will explain to you exactly how this works.
The Dermatest seal
If a (cosmetic) product has passed the compatibility test, it receives the Dermatest seal. According to Dermatest, this is a scientific seal given to independently tested products that come into contact with the skin. Products that bear such a seal tell consumers that they are a safe and tested product.
The Dermatest guarantee seal, which was awarded to our products, shows that the product was safe to use during a patch test.
This is how the Dermatest test works
To determine the skin compatibility of a product, a patch test is carried out. This is an established procedure that follows strict guidelines and internationally defined rules, which are continuously reviewed and adjusted.
The patch test provides information about whether both skin irritation and existing sensitization can be caused by the product. In industry, the patch test is a routine test intended to test the safety of cosmetics for external use.
To test our products, Dermatest recruited 30 testers who had sensitive skin.
The process of the patch test can be summarized as follows:
1. The test product is applied to the skin at an appropriate concentration and covered by a test patch. Skin contact with the test product is limited in time, which promotes absorption of the test substance.
2. After 24, 48 and 72 hours of application, the skin area is examined for skin irritations such as redness. This happens 30-60 minutes after the patch is removed.
3. Evaluation of the test: If skin irritation occurs in more than 10% of testers, the product does not pass the patch test and therefore does not receive the certificate and is not allowed to market itself as “dermatologically tested”.
If the product passes the patch test, it receives a certificate and receives the Dermatest guarantee seal.
Of course in the Dermatest test
As already mentioned, both our psoriasis nail balm and our scalp oil have received the Dermatest guarantee seal (our psoriasis care cream received the Dermatest seal in April). No testers experienced any skin irritations, so the products were all rated “very good”.
